The Workshop Series: Marbling w/ Maleza

Workshops

Last week, we gathered on the terrace of our studio for the latest workshop of our ongoing creative series – a marbling workshop that added a splash of colour to our studio. As part of our ongoing effort to explore creativity through hands-on practices, this workshop offered a refreshing and immersive experience, allowing us to step away from screens and engage with a more tactile, artistic process.

What is Marbling?

Marbling is an ancient decorative technique that involves floating pigments on the surface of water and manipulating them to create swirling, fluid patterns. Once the design is ready, paper, fabric, ceramic etc. is laid on top to transfer the unique design, capturing the intricate dance of colors.

Historically used to decorate book covers and liners, marbling offers a distinctive blend of chaos and control, where every piece produced is one-of-a-kind. However, it is not just an artistic technique, it is also a practice used in different cultures as a form of active meditation. Marbling can be seen as a space for inner reflection and a search for harmony between the outer and inner world.

The Workshop Experience

Guided by our skilled instructor Paz aka Maleza, our team was introduced to the technique of marbling—choosing pigments, preparing the water bath, and the delicate art of swirling colors to create stunning effects. We experimented with different techniques and color combinations, allowing each participant to develop their own style.

It was fascinating to see how personal creativity emerged through the process. Some of us went for bold and vibrant designs, while others opted for more subtle, flowing compositions. The unpredictability of the marbling process made it all the more exciting, as no two outcomes were the same, yet each was equally mesmerizing.

Looking Ahead

The marbling workshop was an inspiring reminder that creativity can flourish in unexpected ways when we let go of rigid structures and control and embrace experimentation.

The workshop series is a series of creative workshops varying from paper making and lettering to collage, linocut printmaking, silkscreen printing and much more that we run at our office in a regular basis. Through these workshops we want to explore our creativity using more hands-on practices and develop processes for understanding, developing and supporting mutual learning between our team.
